While I would love to spend my days traveling the world, the reality is I work full time. If I can’t be on a perpetual vacation, I can make my weekends in Houston feel special. That’s why my husband and I plan monthly dates involving something more than Netflix and takeout. These are three of my favorites — perfect for Houstonians and visitors, and with friends or your significant other!

Glass blowing experience
Ever since visiting Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle (which is a must-do, despite its touristy-ness), I was intrigued by glassblowing. My husband surprised me with a class at Three Dimensional Visions, where we made four pieces with the help of our teacher. Glassblowing isn’t easy, but it’s fun — and hot. Third Dimensional Visions is in an open-air warehouse with very hot furnaces — so be prepared to sweat!

Free boat tour of Houston’s ship channel
The Sam Houston boat has been giving public tours of the Houston ship channel since 1958. The 90-minute tour provides information about Houston’s port and the maritime industry while passing cargo ships in the area. I recommend waiting until the weather cools and enjoying the breeze, but there’s an air-conditioned interior, too.

Play chef for an evening 
Houston offers several places to take cooking classes — my favorite is at Central Market. I did a “Holy Mole” class which included appetizers, 2 entrees, sides and dessert. Plus, they served wine and we got leftovers! I also picked up a few cooking tips along the way. For the experience and food, it was a great deal. Central Market offers dozens of classes that will appeal to a variety of tastes, so there’s something for everyone.
